If you work in school IT, you’ll know just how much depends on your Management Information System (MIS). From pupil records, staff details and timetables to logins, permissions and safeguarding, your MIS is the single source of truth that everything else relies on.
Choosing the right MIS is a strategic decision that affects staff workload, pupil access and how consistently your systems run across your school or multi academy trust.
With so many options available, it can be difficult to know which platform is the best fit for your school or MAT.
This guide gives you a clear, neutral overview of MIS systems in UK schools. We’ll explain:
Whether you’re reviewing your current platform, migrating to a new MIS, or managing multiple systems across a trust, this guide helps you understand the role of MIS in efficient, secure and consistent school IT.
Your Management Information System (MIS) is the beating heart of school data, holding everything from pupil records and attendance to staff details, timetables and pastoral information.
In short, it’s a single source of truth for your school or trust.
For IT teams, your MIS drives all the essentials:
If the data in your MIS is accurate, everything else downstream – from logins to learning platforms – just works. If it’s messy, you’ll feel it first.
See our guide on why MIS data accuracy is essential for schools and MATs.
Your MIS shouldn’t be seen as just another piece of admin software. It’s a strategic decision that shapes the day-to-day running of your school or trust.
The right MIS can save hours of manual data entry, make registers easier to manage and cut down on reporting headaches. A poor fit means more duplication, confusion and support tickets.
Every login, timetable and classroom group starts with MIS data. When the system makes it hard to keep information accurate, students feel the impact, missing access to the right lessons, platforms, and learning experiences.
For MATs in particular, having different schools on different systems can make it difficult to get a single view of staff and pupil data.
Standardising on one MIS – or at least knowing how to integrate them properly – is key to efficiency and compliance.
Choosing the “right MIS” should be based on your unique needs as a school or trust. It’s about making sure the systems you pick support teaching, learning, and IT.
So how do you decide which MIS will work best for your school or trust?
Each system has its own strengths, focus areas, and ways of working.
What matters most is finding a solution that fits your context, whether that’s a single primary, a large secondary, or a multi-academy trust with schools spread across different sites.
Below, we’ve outlined some of the MIS providers Salamander supports. The goal isn’t to recommend one over another, but to give you a clear picture of what’s available and how they connect into the wider IT environment.

Every MIS has its strengths, and the right choice depends on the size, type and needs of your school or trust. What doesn’t change is making sure that data flows seamlessly into the systems your staff and pupils rely on every day.
That’s where our Salamander Integration Suite comes in. We don’t mind which MIS you use – our job is to take the data you already manage and make it work harder for you, automating account creation, group memberships and leavers’ processes so technology just works in the background.
