My Documents & My Shared Documents Web Parts

The My Documents web part gives access to the user's home folder as though it was a document library in SharePoint. Your users will now be able to access their documents stored in their home folder wherever they are in the world using SharePoint. It can be deployed in a Read Only mode where the user can only download files, or Read Write mode where they can upload new files, rename files & folders and create folders.

The My Shared Documents web part gives access to the administrator defined shares as though they are document libraries in SharePoint. Your users will now be able to access the documents stored in the shares wherever they are in the world using SharePoint. It can be deployed in a Read Only mode where the user can only download files, or Read Write mode where they can upload new files, rename files & folders and create folders. In whichever mode it's in it will respect the NTLM permissions on the files and folders.

Both web parts work in SharePoint 2007 and 2010, and in all versions including the free ones (WSS3.0 & SharePoint Foundation).

Features

The My Documents & My Shared Documents web parts allow your users to:

1. Browse the folder hierarchy of their home folder and shares
2. Download files
3. Rename files
4. Rename folders
5. Delete files
6. Delete folder
7. Upload files which are not in the SharePoint blocked file type list
8. Read-only mode
9. Show or hide extensions
10. Show a breadcrumb trail showing where they are in the folder hierarchy

Limitations

As the web parts are not real document libraries, they do have some limitations compared to normal document libraries, mainly around the built in integration between Explorer, Microsft Office and SharePoint.

1. You can't open the home folder in Windows Explorer as with a normal document library.
2. When you open a document directly in an Office application, it can't automatically save back to the server. You have to upload it.
3. They don't show hidden and system files. This is a design decision as Windows Explorer doesn't do this by default.

Cost

For a school (site license) or per server otherwise, the cost of each web part is £500 + VAT. The cost for both together is £750 + VAT.
